Non-man access procedure
When personnel are required to carry out their duties i.e. jetting, CCTV etc, where the manhole is fitted with an AMPS, the standard procedure shall be:
Lift manhole cover using appropriate lifting equipment
Without detaching the liftingchain from its anchored position, grasp the chain, stand upright
taking out the slack then lift the respective hatch accordingly. The hatch will remain in the open position
Normal duties i.e. jetting, CCTV etc may now commence
On completing the normal duties, grasp the lifting chain and lower the hatch back into its
closed position
Replace manhole cover
Man access procedure
When personnel are required to access a manhole chamber to carry out their responsibilities where a manhole is fitted with an AMPS, the standard procedure shall be:
Please take note; all man entry procedures should be carried out in accordance with confined space working regulations.
Lift manhole cover using appropriate lifting equipment
Descend into manhole in an appropriate manner
Once the operative is positioned upon the AMPS, any of the hatches may then be lifted using the respective chain and secured in the open position by fastening the chain to a pre-fixed anchor (hook bolt). This will prevent the hatch from closing
If an operative requires direct access to the pipe invert to carry out their duties, all of the hatches in the 4-hatch system can be lifted. The larger hatches however, are specifically designed to allow man access. Therefore, either of the large hatches should be selected to allow man-access accordingly. Having secured the hatch in the open position, a suitable ladder, preferably a telescopic ladder, shall be placed directly into the pipe invert and secured in position
The operative may now descend from the platform to the pipe invert in a safe manner to carry out their normal duties
On completion of the normal duties, the ladder shall be removed and the hatches closed
Exit manhole in an appropriate manner
Replace manhole cover
